CAPCA IV Project

Tusuubira Women’s Development Agency implements CAPCA IV activities in Wakiso district where it provides capacity building to more than 300 households of small holder farmers. The targeted groups are distributed in the town councils and Sub Counties of Kakiri, Wakiso and Namayumba. Effort is being put on promotion of collective marketing and advocacy by the farmer groups and associations. To date, a number of achievements have been realized as stipulated below;

  • Associations have supported members to improve their household productivity and production – The association Community Based Trainers have offered training in SAP, Sanitation and hygiene, since June 2014 and the associations have lobbied for seedlings, seeds and livestock from other NGOs and Government to improve members’ access to improved varieties. The association lobbied from NAADs and Uganda National development Network.
  • The associations are striving to be useful agricultural research and extension vehicles to improve the delivery of services needed by the members, at a reduced cost. The associations are supporting CBTs to offer training to their group members at a reduced cost.
  • The associations are building capacity to become a framework for sharing information (market prices, new innovations,), coordinating activities and making collective decisions. Using their cello-phones they receive prevailing market price information from CAPCA and relay it to their members.
  • Associations are enabling members’ access to better markets and prices through collective marketing. WCFDA sold off 3.5tons of maize at Shs 400/= per Kg when the prevailing farm gate price was 350/= per Kg. As I write this report the associations have collected 1.7 tons of processed coffee beans and are scheduled to sell it off to Kibinge coffee farmers’ cooperative society. The groups in KCFDA sold off 3.5 tons of maize collectively at a price range of Shs 300/= to 450/= per Kg.
  • Associations have mobilized and encouraged members to save. Namayumba Mixed Farmers Association has 3 out of the 10 member groups engaged in saving, in KCFDA 3 out of the 6 groups are saving.

Success Stories

Members of Wakiso Farmers’ Association advocate for the Elderly Group

30 vulnerable members of ‘Twegatte Farmer’s Group’ under Wakiso Farmer’s Association, in Wakiso district, are experiencing an improved livelihood, by producing crafts including, among others, mats, and bags. The members utilized the advocacy skills acquired through trainings organized by TWDA through the CAPCA project as a platform to source for support for the members in the special interest group category.

The Group’s chairperson Capitolina Nanyanzi (52 yrs]) says that “As a CBT, I used to be approached by the disabled asking me how they could best access aid, so as to do something which can result in household income generation . Using my leadership capacity, I approached the sub county authorities and since the group was registered, we forwarded the list to theWelfare Officer. He later came to inspect and establish the truth about the group formed by the elderly. We then organized the group elderly members and took them to the district.” “We opened up a bank account, on which the group funds could be kept. In July, 2013 we received the Ugx. 800,000 from which materials were later procured to make crafts. We targeted women above 60 years because those in the category of 60 years and above are too weak to engage in farming activities though they need basic necessities of life,” she added
